This supper was with two men who have maybe a little but probably no affinity with designers. Jeroen Laven (planner and director Stipo) and Eric van Keulen (business & commercial director De Zwarte Hond) have much to do with architects and urban designers, but they daily are surprised about them.

It was certainly not a peeling evening. They explain that creativity and naivety perhaps leads to great designs, but mostly not to a good business model for users and owners. Architecture and urbanism cannot without economy. Designers should delve into business models to be taken seriously again. This knowledge might be rescued their own business also.

Often eaten at Huson. I can not say every time that it was good. Next month we have to visit another restaurant.

Daan Bakker (Daf-architecten), Jeroen de Willigen (DeZwarteHond), Jasper de Haan (architect) and I invite each month a number of colleagues to eat, drink and discuss about our profession, the city of Rotterdam and related matters.

The last Monday in September was reserved for Hester scheurwater and Mischa van Teeffelen. Both ladies are performing artist. Hester is her own subject and Micha combines food with theater. The dynamics of physical performances is in strong contrast to the static nature of architecture, but occasionally we were a little quiet by that much of self-expression.

Restaurant Huson has now also round tables. This is a much better setting for our meetings.

Urban designer Henk Hartzema and architect Tom Frantzen were our guests on the last Monday of August. Both have a cheerful attitude on their profession and are not influenced by any pessimism or cynicism. If necessary they self-initiate and organize projects. Besides designer they work in some projects as intermediate or developer. I wonder what roles they have in the future to fulfil.

We again eat at Huson . They rebuilt the restaurant and they had another menu?! About the quality of both interventions we doubt very much. It was lovely sitting outside.

We invite the landscape architects Saline Verhoeven (Bureau B +B urban design and landscape architecture) and Peter Veenstra (LOLA Landscape Architects) to discuss the public domain. On Monday, July 25 they both talked freely and very enthusiastic about their office and projects. Landscape architects have a number of properties which they can survive in this difficult time. The relationship between research and practice is obvious and still very strong. And they have a proper way to control long-term and complex design and implementation processes. A nice craftsmanship.

We found the Park (next to the Euromast), designed by Zocher, a suitable setting to eat with our guests. Restaurant Harbour Club in Villa Park View was a less good idea.

Mark van de Velde (Manager staff living at housing corporation Havensteder) and Ergün Erkoçu (Architect-owner Concept0031) both have an entrepreneurial and a committed attitude. The have both an obvious way combine this as respectively district manager and designer. Without being pushy or preachy. Without commercial or dogmatic.
