Kirsten van den Berg (consultant and urban designer) and Thieu Knibbeler (Senior Advisor Monuments, Municipality of Rotterdam) were two fine guests during our fortieth supper. Past, present and future of the built history makes a discussion emotional, anxious and excited at the same time. Disagreement what a monument is or should be is there always. The current crisis offers opportunities, but in the high rate of unused real estate is problematic. And the possibilities seem endless with existing property. Kirsten and Thieu told in a very engaging way about all these topics.
We had a delicious dinner at Restaurant Eendracht . The dishes from the wood oven were somewhat confusing in terms of composition and their quality of the wines was too volatile.
Daan Bakker (Daf-architecten), Jeroen de Willigen (DeZwarteHond), Jasper de Haan (architect) and I invite each month a number of colleagues to eat, drink and discuss about our profession, the city of Rotterdam and related matters.

This supper was with two men who have maybe a little but probably no affinity with designers. Jeroen Laven (planner and director Stipo) and Eric van Keulen (business & commercial director De Zwarte Hond) have much to do with architects and urban designers, but they daily are surprised about them.
It was certainly not a peeling evening. They explain that creativity and naivety perhaps leads to great designs, but mostly not to a good business model for users and owners. Architecture and urbanism cannot without economy. Designers should delve into business models to be taken seriously again. This knowledge might be rescued their own business also.
Often eaten at Huson. I can not say every time that it was good. Next month we have to visit another restaurant.

Urban designer Henk Hartzema and architect Tom Frantzen were our guests on the last Monday of August. Both have a cheerful attitude on their profession and are not influenced by any pessimism or cynicism. If necessary they self-initiate and organize projects. Besides designer they work in some projects as intermediate or developer. I wonder what roles they have in the future to fulfil.
We again eat at Huson . They rebuilt the restaurant and they had another menu?! About the quality of both interventions we doubt very much. It was lovely sitting outside.

Jaap Evert Abrahamse (historian and Senior Researcher of the History of Urbanism at Cultural Heritage Agency of The Netherlands) and Sander Lap (urban designer and landscape architect) were our first guests in 2012. Both have a surprising CV and they are expert in old and new way of urbanism. Jaap Evert is author of the excellent book The Great Explanation of Amsterdam. Urban Development in the Seventeenth Century. Sander has a proactive design practice in urbanism. We have attempted to define the added value of urban design could be for cities and towns in the Netherlands. We don’t know yet, but we had a good dialogue.
More insight about urban planning goes well with a good view on the city. The Euromast is ideal. But it’s no good place for the combination good view and good food. They do their best, but the food and wine were disappointing. Are we don’t go there anymore.
